MINISTRY OF SECURITY AND DDR PUNTLAND STATE OF SOMALIA: PUNTLAND MARITIME POLICE FORCE ARRESTS 11 PIRATES
May 27, 2012 – Puntland State of Somalia – Puntland Maritime Police Force (PMPF) has reached the coastal area (on 26 May 2012) of Hafun District, in Karkar Region of Puntland State of Somalia. The PMPF unit is led by PMPF Commander Col. Abdirizak Dirie Farah and accompanied by senior Puntland Government officials, including Security Minister H.E. Khalif Issa Mudan, Police Commissioner Col. Mohamed Said Jaqanaf, and Deputy Police Commissioner Col. Muhyadin Ahmed Muse.
On Sunday morning around 10:30am, PMPF forces captured 11 pirates in a security operation in Hafun District. The 11 pirates arrested by Puntland forces include Mr. Mohamed Mohamud Mohamed Hassan (Dhafoor), who is a well-known pirate wanted by Puntland authorities for hijacking commercial vessels travelling the Indian Ocean and Gulf of Aden waterways.
Mr. Dhafoor was also part of a group of pirates who killed five members of the Puntland security forces in March 2011 near Hul Anod area, during a Puntland security operation to rescue a kidnapped Danish family. Eight other Puntland security personnel were wounded in that same operation.
The 11 pirates arrested in Hafun District had in their possession one Toyota truck, seven AK-47 assault rifles and one heavy machinegun.
